TORONTO – Unitfive Design is a studio founded by Canadian duo Lisa Santana and Kevin Goddard in their quest to explore craft tradition in contemporary design with evolved metalworking techniques. Their signature is handmade lighting and furniture design which brings an air of fragile extravagance to retail, hospitality and residential settings.
Their latest work is a timberland of hand-forged metal located on the third level of Saks Fifth Avenue’s Toronto flagship. The installation consists of 47 rose champagne-tinted trees that stretch from floor-to-ceiling and grow outwards with delicate branches. Widdled down from 1500 meters of crude steel to nearly 27 meters of composite metal, the forest is finished with a rosy coat of brass. Each element was entirely made by hand at the Unitfive studio with hot forging and blacksmithing techniques. Planted into a meandering base and grazing the ceiling, the configuration screens the ladies fashion department with a lace veil.
