Milan – How does one experience intuition in design? As the modes of a design practice consistently become transdisciplinary and at times even speculative, design intuition requires a willingness to research, receive and translate the giants of a divided contemporary consciousness. To consider even a design detail such as materiality is to consider aesthetics and the relationship with the body, but also sustainability, emerging technologies, workers’ rights and a sense of globalization vs localization.
Today’s designer and design thinker is also a researcher, translator, historian and futurist – meaning that transdisciplinary knowledge is the means for reaching design intuition.
On 19 April, at the Anteo Palazzo del Cinema, Liganova presents a conversation between two of today’s interpreters of design intuition. The day begins with a seminar by renowned trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort introducing the audience to her investigation into textiles and trends for Autumn/Winter 2019-2020. Edelkoort will also present highlights from her popular lecture Spiritual House, which considers the textural and spatial changes happening within the home. The seminar will conclude with an expert talk between Edelkoort and designer Tom Dixon, mediated by St-W’s founder and director Robert Thiemann, which considers the future of design in its various forms. The day will ruminate on conscientious creation and consumption while engaging the optimism synonymous with the potential applications of contemporary design.
In Tom Dixon’s design of the brasserie at the Publicis Drugstore restaurant and bar in Paris, one can see the influence of history colliding with the contemporary use of materials. Pictured throughout, Le Drugstore is an example of Tom Dixon's researched approach to spatial translation. In his reinvention of one of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées icons, the designer demonstrates a generous gesture towards the building's past while confidently applying his own interpretation.
