In the mood for love? Visit this restaurant in Hong Kong

Hong Kong – Bonham Road features several heritage structures, such as the main location of the University of Hong Kong and the red-brick façade of , open since 1932. Understandably, in the 1960s this street was also the place of choice for six upper-class men to gather in a private study room and discuss the city’s most happening venues. Add to that story a bit of In the Mood for Love, also set during that decade, and you have the joint inspiration behind , a new Cantonese restaurant located on Harbour City.

Steve Leung Design Group, the firm behind the new spot, wanted to combine the functionality of a contemporary Chinese dining room with an element of vintage charm. This means that patrons can see traces of throughout the space: it would be easy to imagine Maggie Cheung’s character walking through one of the vintage bead curtains that were popular in that era, or even through some of the Hong Kong-style iron doors the team has included in their proposal.

Most tellingly, the restaurant itself seems to be in the mood for love… and passion. The space is divided into two distinct dining zones, precisely titled Love and Passion. The first is designated for family-style dining, featuring a light colour palette that creates a bright yet intimate ambiance. The second was conceived with a dark palette, where the metallic shelves of the green marble bar complement the bronze lamps and the chandelier whose shapes form the Hexa logo.

But there is also a marked outside influence: the restaurant provides the option of Chinese-style dining tables, which encourage interaction, or Western-style long rectangular tables, which facilitate intimate conversations – the combo is a recent trend in many upscale Chinese restaurants in the city.

Thanks to this thoughtful contemporary adaptation and the attention paid to functional, decorative and historical details, something tells us Chow Mo-wan and Su Li-zhen would feel right at home here… and they would have definitely preferred the second type of table.
