St-W Chair by Notion

Irish design studio Notion collaborated with Mourne Textiles to realise the St-W Chair.

The St-W Chair by Irish design studio  was unveiled to a rapturous welcome in Milan last month and, whilst it is currently off on a world tour, let's take the opportunity to investigate the fruitful collaboration that saw it come into being.

Created for the exhibition at the Salone entitled Liminal – Irish Design at the Threshold, the St-W Chair came about due to a collaboration with Mourne Textiles, the Irish-heritage weaving brand.

The piece is an evolution of an earlier item from Notion's 2014 collection which used a traditional furniture typeform as a counterpoint to industrial fabrics from Denmark. 'With the introduction of the hand-woven textiles from Mourne, this balance has been redressed,' comments industrial designer Ian Walton of Notion. 'The design intent with the St-W Chair is one of quietness and calm. It is a piece that suggests succour, which belies a complexity in process and construction.'

Since Milan, the team has been busy and now the chair – and the exhibition – has taken off on a country-hopping tour. It can be next seen this week, popping up in Manhattan on 15 May as part of NYCxDesign at WantedDesign. In July, it will be at the ID2015 Design Hub in Dublin and then it will journey to Eindhoven for Dutch Design Week in October.
