Amsterdam – One of the cutting-edge products and designs on exhibit at is Lumiduct by Wellsun. St-W Lab, an immersive blend of talks, workshops, exhibitions and panel discussions on 21 and 22 February, explores the future of design for the spaces we live, work, learn and play in.
Wellsun will be exhibiting translucent solar panels in a rotating system that turns towards the sun, revolutionizing efficiency standards of modern buildings. Part of the World Lab which investigates how design can impact the environment and society for the better, Lumiduct can be found next to algae-based 3D-printed objects and emerging technologies that give architects and designers new tools for more environmentally sustainable creations.
Lumiduct addresses a critical contradiction of modern architecture which seeks to be sustainable while meeting contemporary standards – which have trended towards a penchant for the unobstructed natural light and spaciousness endowed by glass façades. The solar-panel system by Wellsun reconciles the aesthetic advantages of glass with the inherent problems of constant sun exposure, such as glare and high cooling loads – all while converting 99% of direct sunlight into usable energy.
At the moment, even the most sustainable office buildings in the world rely on off-site solar panels to satisfy their large consumption needs. The Edge building in Amsterdam has a 98.4% BREEAM rating, yet requires neighbouring roofs with solar panels to achieve this. Wellsun’s product eliminates the need for off-site energy production, enabling the environmentally conscious technology to be integrated into façades.
